NYC-area Macy's workers vote to authorize strike

Union workers at Macy's flagship Manhattan store and three other New York locations have voted to strike if a new contract is not reached by Wednesday night.

The announcement was made by Local 1-S of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. It said Monday that more than 4,000 workers voted unanimously to authorize a strike.

The other stores are in the Bronx, Queens and Westchester County.

The union says Macy's wants to reduce paid time off, eliminate pension benefits for new employees and raise the cost of health care. Local President Ken Bordieri says workers are prepared to walk out at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

Macy's Inc. says it is "available 24/7 to bargain in good faith until an agreement is reached."
