U.S.-Mexico border shootout wounds suspected drug runners

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - At least three suspected drug runners in Mexico were wounded in a shootout with U.S. law enforcement officers on the Texas-Mexico border on Thursday morning, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The officers were "attempting to interdict a large drug load" when they were fired upon from Mexico, according to a press release from the department.

"A suspicious vehicle on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande River was observed along with two cartel drug recovery boats," the press release said. "Three law enforcement patrol boats arrived at the scene and received heavy gun fire from the Mexican side while attempting to interdict the drug-laden boats."

The incident took place in Hidalgo County in South Texas, department spokeswoman Tela Mange told Reuters.

Mexican authorities are on the scene, the press release said.

Mange said no other information was immediately available.
