An electronics technician has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to wounding two second-grade girls in a suburban San Diego elementary school playground.
Brendan O'Rourke entered his plea Thursday to charges of premeditated attempted murder and assault with a firearm in the October shooting at Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad.
Prosecutors say he jumped a fence and fired at least six shots before getting tackled by construction workers.
The 41-year-old defendant could face a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted. His trial begins Oct. 3 in Vista Superior Court.
