Denver councilman wins runoff election for mayor

Denver Councilman Michael Hancock has won a runoff election and will become the city's new mayor.

Hancock defeated former state Sen. Chris Romer Tuesday night after a sometimes feisty campaign that featured more than $4 million in spending. The two Democrats were the top vote getters out of 10 candidates in the May 3 election.

About a third of Denver's 300,000 registered voters had cast ballots by late Tuesday, and unofficial, early totals showed Hancock leading Romer 57 percent to 43 percent, or 49,957 votes to 38,290.

Hancock will be sworn in July 18, replacing interim Mayor Guillermo "Bill" Vidal. Denver's last full-term mayor, Democrat John Hickenlooper, became Colorado's governor in January.
