Thousands of firefighters are expected to attend a public memorial for two San Francisco firefighters who were caught in an explosion while battling a house fire.
The memorial for veteran firefighters Vincent Perez and Anthony "Tony" Valerio will be held Friday afternoon at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco. The fire department is expecting thousands of firefighters from around California and other states to attend.
Authorities say the two were battling a house fire in the city's Diamond Heights neighborhood Thursday when a flashover caused a room's contents to explode.
The 48-year-old Perez died at the scene, while the 53-year-old Valerio succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. Both men were San Francisco natives assigned to the same engine company.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the last time San Francisco lost more than one firefighter to the same fire was in 1946.
