Southern historic marker vandalized in Alabama

Authorities say a historic landmark near the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery has been vandalized.

A marker commemorating the location of former Confederate offices is now covered with duct tape and an unidentified black substance.

The marker is located in Montgomery's historic downtown district. The memorial features several flags that were used during the time of the confederacy, including a picture and historical description of the Confederate battle flag.

Mayor Todd Strange told the Montgomery Advertiser that the vandalism is an example of defacing public property, which he says recognizes the area's historical significance.
