PHOENIX (Reuters) - Two Arizona toddlers have been struck and killed by cars driven by their parents in separate incidents in Tucson and Phoenix, police said on Tuesday.

In Tucson, 25-year-old Jessica Hunt was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and child abuse after allegedly hitting her 4-year-old son on Monday night in Tucson Police Sergeant Diana Lopez said.

The boy died from his injuries a short time later at University Medical Center.

Detectives believe that Hunt was negligent and under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time, Lopez said.

In Phoenix, a 2-year-old girl was hit when her father ran over her with his car as he left the home on Tuesday morning, Phoenix Police Sergeant Trent Crump said.

Police said the girl has been playing with her 7-year-old brother and father outside the home when the mother arrived. The dad then left to run some errands when the accident occurred.

"He had no idea where she came from when he backed into her," Crump said.

The father, whose name is not being released, unsuccessfully tried first aid and took the child to a neighbor's house for help. She died after being taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

"We're not expecting to file any criminal charges," Crump told Reuters. "It's probably going to go down as one of those tragic accidents."
