US plans to nominate new ambassador to Mexico

U.S. officials have advised their Mexican counterparts that career diplomat Anthony Wayne is expected to be nominated for the post of U.S. ambassador to Mexico.

A diplomatic official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no formal nomination has been made, said the State Department sent its request last week to the Mexican Foreign Ministry asking that it evaluate Wayne's nomination.

Wayne has been the deputy U.S. ambassador in Afghanistan since May 2010 and was previously the U.S. ambassador to Argentina. The last U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Carlos Pascual, resigned in March after leaked diplomatic cables showed he had criticized Mexican President Felipe Calderon's antinarcotics strategy.
