The Obama administration has designated a Gaza Strip-based group responsible for attacks on Israel and Egypt as a foreign terrorist organization.
The State Department said Thursday that the "Army of Islam" has fired numerous rockets on Israel and kidnapped two Fox News journalists in Gaza in 2006. A statement also blamed the group for attacking Egyptians in Cairo and Heliopolis.
The shadowy extremist Muslim group draws inspiration from al-Qaida though it is not believed to have operational links. It is led by Mumtaz Dughmush and operates in Gaza and the West Bank.
The terrorist designation bans Americans from doing business with the group and freezes any assets it might have in the United States.
