Suspicious package closes SoCal train station

A suspicious package at a train station in Long Beach, Calif., caused an hourlong shutdown of commuter rail service and evacuation of a nearby nursing home.

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Rick Jager says someone noticed a shoebox-sized package on top of a ticket vending machine at the Wardlow Blue Line station shortly before 9 a.m. Monday.

He says the station was closed and trains halted. Passengers were bused around the closure.

Sheriff's Lt. Andy Rosso says a nearby nursing home also was evacuated while bomb experts checked the package.

Jager says the package was found not to be dangerous and the station reopened.
