Review finds 26 Conn. students illegally enrolled

Connecticut officials say 26 students have been removed from Norwalk schools since fall for being illegally enrolled, but a homeless single mother is the only parent to be criminally charged.

The district's review comes as Tanya McDowell prepares for her second court date on a larceny charge for enrolling her 5-year-old son under her baby sitter's address.

McDowell has pleaded not guilty and returns to court Wednesday.

Officials say they've found 26 students illegally enrolled in Norwalk schools during this academic year. Investigations are pending into the residency of eight others.

School officials tell The Hour that they didn't pursue charges against McDowell, whose case was brought to prosecutors' attention by housing authority officials. McDowell's supporters say she has been singled out and they want the criminal charge dropped.
