The husband of a Florida woman accused of killing her two teenagers says his wife suffered from mental illness since before they were married and likely had substance-abuse issues.
Still, Army Col. Parker Schenecker says he never suspected his wife Julie would harm their children. He talked to People magazine for an issue that will be on newsstands Friday.
Police say 50-year-old Julie Schenecker shot her 16-year-old daughter Calyx and 13-year-old son Beau in January. They say she told investigators that she did it because they were rude and talked back. She has pleaded not guilty and her attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.
Parker Schenecker tells People that "we were a typical American family, but we had a sick member."
