Ga. veteran to be buried 66 years after war death

Military officials say a World War II serviceman from Georgia will be buried Friday, 66 years after his plane went down on a small island in the Philippines.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the remains of Army Air Forces Tech. Sgt. James G. Maynard of Ellenwood were identified using DNA technology.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced this week that he'll be buried with full military honors. He will be buried Friday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Military officials say they lost radio contact with Maynard and his five crew members in their C-47A Skytrain on a March 12, 1945, mission. A search turned up no evidence of them.

A Philippines National Police officer later contacted U.S. officials about a possible World War II-era aircraft crash, and the remains were eventually found.
