SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A minor earthquake shook northern California on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, but local police said there were no immediate reports of damage.

The 3.8 magnitude quake hit at 2:57 p.m. local time at a depth of 8.5 miles and was centered two miles southeast of Pacifica, a coastal town south of San Francisco, the USGS reported.

Pacifica Police Captain Jim Tasa said by telephone that he felt the jolt but there were no immediate reports of damage.
