LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Authorities issued a security alert on Friday at an elementary school in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles as police searched the vicinity for a murder suspect, police and school officials said.

The Carpenter Elementary School was placed on a "lockdown," meaning the campus was closed to outside visitors and students were confined to classrooms, shortly after 11 a.m. local time, said a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Police were called to the Studio City neighborhood to set up a security perimeter around several blocks, including the school, according to police spokeswoman Rosario Herrera.

She said the suspect was not believed to be on school grounds but in the surrounding area. No further information was immediately available about the murder or suspect involved.

Students on the campus were reported safe, the LAUSD spokeswoman said.
