UN chief urges Gbagbo to exit gracefully

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo (loh-RAHN' bahg-BOH') to leave for the sake of his peoples' well-being.

During a visit to Congress, Ban said: "This is his last opportunity to gracefully exit."

Gbagbo is holed up in a bunker below his residence and has refused to leave despite being surrounded by forces loyal to the country's democratically elected president Alassane Ouattara.

On Monday, United Nations attack helicopters acting on a U.N. Security Council resolution bombarded six arms depots in Abidjan _ including a cache inside the presidential compound.

Ban called that operation a success.
