Boehner says deal not near on budget stalemate

House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'-nur) says negotiators aren't as close to a deal to cut spending and avoid a government shutdown as he thought last night, and is blaming the White House.

At a news conference, the top Republican in Congress said White House officials are seeking more of the same, harkening back to his earlier statements that Democrats were using gimmicks to make it look like they wanted to cut spending.

Even so, the Ohio Republican says there's no reason for the government to shut down. He noted Republicans are passing legislation today in the House to provide funding for one week, cut spending and allot enough money for the Pentagon's operations through the Sept. 30 end of the current budget year.
