Police Tuesday identified a man killed in a shootout with a security guard at a San Diego-area Apple Store as a 23-year-old parolee and gang member.
Alex Somphonh Choulamontry was one of three suspects who tried to flee after the burglary Monday morning, Chula Vista police said.
Choulamontry and two accomplices forced the store's door open and had planned to smash display cases when they spotted security guard Jose Jimenez. Police said one of them began shooting and the guard returned fire. The shootout continued into the parking lot.
The trio fled in a car but crashed into a nearby light pole, and Choulamontry died from a head wound. Police arrested the accomplices, who were booked on numerous charges including robbery and assault with a firearm. Both were scheduled to be arraigned in Chula Vista Superior Court on Wednesday.
Choulamontry had a criminal record including convictions for theft, drug possession and drunken driving.
The guard, a former San Diego County sheriff's deputy, was not injured.
