A gift of 21,000 cookbooks has elevated New York University's Fales Library into the ranks of the top food libraries in the country.
The Fales Library now has more than 50,000 cookbooks. The donation of 21,000 volumes came from George and Jenifer Lang, the longtime owners of Cafe des Artistes on New York City's Upper West Side.
The New York Times says the books arrived in February but have not been catalogued yet.
Other major food libraries include the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive at the University of Michigan and the Schlesinger Library at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard.
The NYU library also includes 10,000 books from the collection of Cecily Brownstone, a food writer at The Associated Press from 1947 to 1986.
