Authorities: Slain Spanaway boy had bruises

Authorities say a boy found dead in his Spanaway home died of asphyxiation and there's evidence he had been abused before.

Pierce County sheriff's detective Ed Troyer tells The News Tribune that 5-year-old Jordan Stewart had been dead for at least 24 hours before deputies found him at his home.

His father, David Stewart, shot and killed himself Tuesday after a high-speed car chase on Interstate 5 in Thurston County. The boy's mother, Kristy Sampels, was also found dead in the car of a gunshot wound, and the Thurston County coroner on Wednesday ruled her death a homicide.

Troyer says investigators are still trying to piece together what happened, and they aren't sure who killed the boy. He was found with a plastic bag over his head, and he had bruising that suggested he'd been abused before.
