Obama asks supporters to defend his record

President Barack Obama says he'll be running for re-election against a Republican Party that's feeling good about itself, and that he needs supporters to brag about his record, not get defensive about it.

A day after formally announcing his 2012 candidacy, Obama told supporters on a conference call Tuesday night that while he's busy governing over the coming months he needs them to be spreading the word about progress he's made on the economy and other issues.

The president asked supporters to mobilize a grass-roots movement more far-reaching, focused and innovative than the one that improbably launched him to the White House in 2008.

Obama will have to work hard to re-energize his base as he seeks a second term in a tough political environment.
