Engineers assessing a section of the Pacific Coast Highway that crumbled into the ocean say the popular scenic roadway will remain closed north of the scenic Big Sur region for at least a month.
The state Department of Transportation says a contractor will begin work Friday on the stretch of Highway 1 between Carmel and Big Sur.
Department spokeswoman Susana Cruz says at least 150 feet of the road is damaged after Wednesday's collapse. Cruz says a total of 700 feet is being monitored for instability.
The closure cuts off access from the north to many of the Big Sur region's popular tourist destinations.
Travelers are advised to take inland Highway 101 to Highway 46 to access Big Sur from the south. That adds about 3 1/2 hours to the trip.
