A top State Department official says military force is not the answer to the sectarian fight raging in Bahrain.
William Burns, the undersecretary of State for political affairs, told a Senate panel in prepared testimony Thursday that the stakes in Bahrain requires more than restoring law and order. He said real political grievances between the Sunni monarchy and Shiite majority must be addressed.
The unrest in Bahrain is a major challenge to the US because it is home to the Navy's Fifth Fleet. It is also seen as a barrier to Shiite Iran.
