A police union official on Long Island says someone yelled "gun" moments before a Nassau County officer was killed in a friendly fire shooting.
Nassau County PBA President James Carver says Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf was fatally shot by an officer from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority police. The shooting happened Saturday night in Massapequa (mas-uh-PEEK'-wuh) Park, several minutes after Nassau officers fatally shot a knife-wielding disturbed man.
Breifkopf was assigned to the elite Bureau of Special Operations. He was arriving after the first shooting and had a rifle slung under his arm when he was killed. Authorities believe the MTA officer thought Breitkopf posed a threat.
Nassau Police Lt. Kevin Smith says some officers heard shouts about a gun but did not elaborate. The MTA declined comment.
Breifkopf's funeral is Friday.
