The Atlanta Ballet and Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet are teaming up with legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp to create a new work that will have its world premiere in Atlanta next year.
The companies announced Tuesday at a news conference in Atlanta that the 70-year-old Tharp will use the music of Franz Schubert and the writing of George MacDonald as her inspiration.
Tharp has choreographed shows from Broadway to Las Vegas to Hollywood, including movie credits for "Hair" and "Ragtime." She's won a Tony Award, two Emmys, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts and a 2008 Kennedy Center honor.
The show will premiere in Atlanta in February 2012 and in Winnipeg, Canada, the fall of next year. Tharp will be in Atlanta over the summer working with dancers.
