New Mexico decapitated dog trial ends in hung jury

Jurors couldn't reach a verdict in the New Mexico trial of a man accused of decapitating a dog with a chain saw, so the judge in Farmington declared a mistrial.

Corey Bowen is the second man charged in the case.

The Farmington Daily Times reports the jury was evenly split in its final vote Tuesday about the 32-year-old man's guilt. He's still charged with fourth-degree felony extreme cruelty to animals.

Authorities say Bowen and another Farmington-area man, 32-year-old Teddy Sexton, cut off the pit bull's head with a chain saw when a kitchen knife didn't work.

Sexton pleaded guilty and is serving eight years in prison.

Authorities say the men killed the dog after it bit a 9-year-old girl during a September barbecue at Sexton's home.
