NJ man accused of taking military secrets to China

A former employee of a New Jersey technology company has been arrested and charged with transporting restricted military data to China.

Sixing Liu also is known as Steve Liu. He faces one count of exporting defense-related technical data without a license.

The U.S. attorney's office says Liu was part of a research and development team that worked on navigation devices for the Department of Defense.

Liu is accused of taking a laptop containing hundreds of documents relating to the projects on a trip to China in November and making a presentation at a technology conference there.

Liu appeared in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Tuesday. He was detained pending a March 14 bail hearing.

He could face up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted.

His public defender hasn't commented.
