A group of Afghan students who took part in an upstate New York college cultural exchange program is ready to head home _ minus three who went missing last month.
The missing students are two 21-year-old women and a man. They vanished from Nazareth College in suburban Rochester. One soon contacted her family to say she was safe. Another contacted the school through a lawyer.
A Nazareth spokeswoman said Friday the college has been told by the U.S. government the third student also is safe.
College officials have speculated the students decided to defect.
The remaining 17 students in the group are scheduled to return to Afghanistan on Sunday after spending three days in Washington, D.C.
The Department of State hasn't returned a call seeking comment. It has said the students chosen to participate were "well-vetted."
