Authorities in California say dying winds are aiding crews fighting a wildfire at the southern end of Vandenberg Air Force Base.
Base emergency officials said Thursday the fire erupted around 1 p.m. near Space Launch Complex-3 as emergency response teams were inspecting the base in Santa Barbara County.
The fire has grown to 400 acres, or more than a half square mile.
Emergency officials say several power poles that supply power to the base have burned. Six buildings reported threatened earlier were not damaged.
Portions of the base have been evacuated. A beach and a highway have been closed to give firefighters better access.
