A Boston man who police say might have thought he was targeting a rival gang member has been convicted of fatally shooting a 15-year-old boy as he waited for a bus to school.
A jury found 19-year-old Xzeniyeju Chukwuezi (zen-YAY'-zhoo chuk-WAY'-zee) guilty Tuesday in Suffolk Superior Court of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole.
Authorities say Chukwuezi shot eighth-grader Soheil Turner in the back of the head in the Roxbury neighborhood on May 7, 2009. Police say the boy had no gang affiliations.
Police identified Chukwuezi through witnesses and surveillance video. He denied being the gunman.
Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley called the defendant a "coward."
