A psychiatric patient's mental fitness has abruptly come under question on the cusp of his trial in the meat-cleaver slaying of a New York therapist.
A judge ordered a psychiatric examination Friday after David Tarloff refused to come out of a courthouse holding cell during jury selection. His lawyer says Tarloff wouldn't respond to questions.
The exam is set for Monday morning. It will determine whether Tarloff is competent to stand trial.
The schizophrenic Tarloff was found mentally unfit for a time after his 2008 arrest in the death of Kathryn Faughey (FAW'-hee). He's planning an insanity defense.
Faughey was killed in her Manhattan office. Tarloff told police he'd gone there to rob her office mate, a psychiatrist who treated him 17 years earlier.
