Jury selection begins in Calif. shackled teen case

Jury selection is under way in the trial of a man accused of holding captive and torturing a 16-year-old boy in a Central California home for more than a year.

Anthony Waiters has pleaded not guilty in San Joaquin County Superior Court to aggravated mayhem, torture and false imprisonment charges involving the teen allegedly held at the home of Walters' neighbors.

Opening arguments could begin next week.

The boy escaped in December 2008 by scaling a fence and seeking help at a fitness center.

Three other defendants _ Michael Schumacher, Kelly Lau and Caren Ramirez _ pleaded guilty last week to charges that included use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury to a child.

Under terms of the plea deal, each could serve at least 30 years in prison.
