Family of man swept away in sewer thanks rescuers

The family of a Missouri sewer worker is thanking the rescuers who found him after he traveled more than a mile through a sanitary sewer system.

Thirty-year-old Daniel Collins of Collins, Mo., remains hospitalized Thursday in critical condition at St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City.

The married father of three was in the sewer system for about 90 minutes Tuesday morning before rescuers heard him and pulled him from the bottom of a collector box in the Kansas City suburb of Raymore.

The hospital says he is sedated and continues to be treated for severe respiratory failure. Rescuers said he likely swalled and inhaled the sewage as he was swept through a 27-inch pipe.
