Defense reports police pen pal ruse in Levy case

Police seeking a confession from a suspect in the 2001 slaying of Washington intern Chandra Levy tried to establish a phony pen pal relationship with the man in prison but were unsuccessful.

Attorneys for Ingmar Guandique, who faces scheduled trial starting Monday on murder and kidnapping charges in Levy's death, called the letters written in 2004 and 2005 under a woman's pseudonym unethical.

Defense attorneys, informed of the pen pal attempt this week, asked a judge to dismiss the case by noting Guandique had invoked his right to remain silent. Prosecutors said police did nothing wrong and the judge denied the defense request Thursday.

Levy's disappearance had garnered national attention when she was romantically linked to then-Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif.
