Annan calls for more African aid for farmers

Former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan says progress has been made but more still needs to be done to help smallholder farmers in Africa.

Annan was speaking Thursday at the World Food Prize symposium in Des Moines, Iowa, where he talked about the plight smallholder farmers face in overcoming challenges such as poor seeds and poor management of land and water resources.

He says an unprecedented effort from international organizations has led to some progress, but African governments and the private sector need to do more to help smallholder farmers, who are dependent on what they can grow on only a few acres for their own survival.

Annan says a prosperous and stable Africa is necessary for efforts to reduce hunger to succeed.
