The search for a Chicago hiker missing in the western Colorado mountains has been suspended.
The search for 31-year-old James Nelson in the rugged Holy Cross Wilderness near Vail ended at midnight Tuesday.
Eagle County sheriff Joe Hoy said he and search and rescue volunteers made the decision with a heavy heart after four days of searching failed to find Nelson.
Nelson set out for a five-day, 25-mile hike and was reported missing by his fiance Friday when he failed to return.
He was last seen by two other hikers on Oct. 3. Lesley Buttars told the Vail Daily that Nelson had a lot of gear on his back but didn't appear to be lost.
Searchers will continue to look for clues to Nelson's whereabouts whenever they're called to other missions there.
