Former Sen. Lincoln Chafee's independent campaign for Rhode Island governor says it owes $8 in federal income taxes for 2009.
Deputy Campaign Manager Mike Trainor on Monday said the campaign failed to pay taxes on $159 in investment income last year, and plans to mail a return Tuesday.
The bill for Chafee's gubernatorial campaign is significantly less than what his old Senate campaign committee owes. The Associated Press reported last week that the Senate campaign failed to pay taxes for five years and owed an estimated $18,400 in taxes and fees to the state and federal governments.
The campaign blamed a misunderstanding of tax regulations.
Trainor says the $8 figure doesn't include fees or interest. He says they aren't yet sure about any state tax owed for 2009 since offices are closed for the Columbus holiday.
