Nine miners who survived a deadly fire at a Massey Energy coal mine four years ago have settled their lawsuits against the company.
The Charleston Gazette reported Monday that the settlements were reached last week ahead of a trial that was scheduled to begin Tuesday in Logan County Circuit Court.
Terms of the settlements weren't released. Massey spokesman Jeff Gillenwater confirmed Monday night that Massey's insurance company settled the cases. He declined to comment further.
Two men died in the conveyer belt fire in January 2006 at Massey's Aracoma Alma No. 1 mine.
The nine miners alleged that breathing the thick, black smoke caused them long-term health problems.
Massey Energy is based in Richmond, Va.
