Authorities are boosting patrols after a series of drive-by shootings that narrowly missed motorists in a Sierra foothill community in Northern California.

Four of the shootings were before dawn Tuesday, the last two after dark the same day near Valley Springs, 57 miles southeast of the state capital.

Calaveras County Sheriff's Sgt. Dave Seawell says one small-caliber bullet smashed both a driver's side and passenger window. Another bullet hit a windshield, while two more struck drivers' doors.

Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers increased patrols in the area Wednesday. They were looking for a light-colored, late-model sedan that was seen after one of the shootings.

Investigators say a shot fired into a Valley Springs house Dec. 17 also might be connected.
