The parents of a man accused of killing a Fresno delivery truck driver say their son had been held for a psychiatric evaluation just days before the shooting.
Police say 27-year-old Joey Lopez fatally shot Richard Hernandez as he was making a beer delivery to a convenience store early Monday.
Lopez's parents, Joe and Theresa Lopez, say the tragedy could have been avoided because their son was supposed to be under psychiatric observation at a hospital.
They say they called 911 during a domestic dispute Dec. 4 and told authorities he needed mental help. They say he was taken in for observation then released later that day.
Fresno police would not confirm the Lopezes' account, citing confidentiality rules surrounding a person's medical history.
