U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii says he's resigning from Congress.

The longtime Democratic congressman, who has been planning to run for governor, said in a statement Friday the decision was a difficult one for him.

But he says he concluded a resignation will "allow someone to be elected who will carry on the work of this office."

In another statement on his campaign Web site, Abercrombie also says he wants to go "all in" in his effort to win the Democratic nomination for governor. He is likely to face Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann in that contest.

A news conference is scheduled for Sunday, at which Abercrombie is expected to detail when he will formally step down.

Abercrombie has represented Hawaii's 1st Congressional District continuously since 1991.
