TAG: Correspondent Jeremy House reporting. Consumers’ outlook has generally been gloomy since the pandemic and particularly after inflation first spiked in 2021.
————————————–
VERBATIM: The drop came as Americans cited concerns about stubbornly high inflation and interest rates as well as fears that unemployment could rise. The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index dropped to 67.4 this month from a final reading of 77.2 in April. That is still about 14% higher than a year ago.

The Biden administration plans to impose major new tariffs on a range of imports from China. According to a U-S official familiar with the plan, new tariffs would be slapped on Chinese electric vehicles, semiconductors, solar equipment and medical supplies. China’s EVs present a problem for President Biden, who has pushed for electric vehicles in his climate agenda. But China’s low-priced vehicles could pose a threat to U-S manufacturing jobs. As the 2024 campaign wears on, both the president and Donald Trump are vowing to be tough on China.
