A man charged with looting the house of a Northern California family that died in a car crash insists he didn't know about the tragedy at the time.

Twenty-six-year-old Michael Gutierrez apologized in an interview Thursday with The Press-Democrat of Santa Rosa. He told the newspaper someone had merely told him the house would be empty.

Authorities say Gutierrez and his girlfriend, Amber True, burglarized the home of Johnathan and Susan Maloney three days after the couple and their two young children were killed by a speeding car that ran a red light.

Gutierrez and True pleaded not guilty to felony theft charges.

Gutierrez says he wanted to refute speculation that he preyed on the tragedy. He said, "I am not a monster."
