An epileptic garbage truck driver in New York City who skipped his anti-seizure medication before crashing his truck and killing a British couple has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
Auvryn (AW'-vrehn) Scarlett apologized as he was sentenced Wednesday. A judge said the 54-year-old had made himself "a time bomb ready to explode" before the February 2008 wreck near Pennsylvania Station.
Prosecutors say Scarlett hid his illness when he got the job.
Tourists Jacklyn Timmons and Andrew Hardie were killed when Scarlett's out-of-control truck barreled onto a sidewalk. They were both 47 and lived in Yeovil, Somerset, about 130 miles from London. A third person was seriously hurt.
A jury convicted Scarlett of murder and assault.
