What does hell mean to you? Ask almost any Christian and each answer will be a little bit different from the last.
Is it a burning, unending nightmare for sinners and billions more unsaved souls, an element of mainstream Christian teaching for centuries? Or is hell here on Earth in the distractions, addictions and emptiness of not knowing God?
The idea is receiving fresh scrutiny from some believers following the work of a prominent evangelical pastor, Rob Bell, who questions the traditional idea of Christian hell in his book "Love Wins."
Even before Bell's book was published this month, pastors, theologians and people in the pews were alternately branding it heresy, hailing it as a breakthrough or landing somewhere in the middle.
