UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley says snap presidential elections in Venezuela called by the Constituent Assembly will be neither "free nor fair."

Haley said in a statement Thursday that President Nicolas Maduro and the pro-government assembly "are showing the world that they never had any intention of allowing the people of Venezuela to have their voices heard."

She said "the United States will not stand idle as the people of Venezuela continue to be victimized by the Maduro regime," but didn't elaborate.

The assembly on Tuesday approved holding the presidential election by the end of April — months ahead of the traditional voting time. Maduro confirmed Wednesday he will seek a second term.

Haley echoed wide international rejection of the early vote and called for free, transparent elections. .
