BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A small group of longtime Alabama allies is at the forefront defending Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore amid sexual misconduct claims.
They're all conservative Christians, and they've all been with Moore since his early days in the culture wars over the place of religion in public life.
Campaign strategist Dean Young is the most vocal of Moore's tight-knit group. He recently spoke at an event outside the state Capitol declaring that Alabama voters have been picked by God to decide the nation's future.
Others including longtime aides and attorneys are helping Moore fight allegations that are threatening his campaign.
Decades-old accusations involving young women are now threatening Moore's political life in a race against Democrat Doug Jones. Moore says he hasn't done anything wrong.
