FRANKLIN, N.C. (AP) — Voters have re-elected a North Carolina town board member to another term in office despite the fact he died a week ago.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports six people were on the ballot in Tuesday's elections for three open seats on the Franklin Town Board. Among the names was Billy Mashburn, who died Nov. 1 after battling cancer.
Mashburn came in third, meaning he retained his seat. Given that he won, the board gets to appoint someone to his seat, and they don't have to choose from the remaining three candidates.
The board next meets on Dec. 5.
Franklin is about 70 miles (112 kilometers) southwest of Asheville and nearly 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of the Georgia line.
