DYER, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana prosecutor says no charges will be filed against officers in the fatal shooting of a suspected car thief following a police chase in south suburban Chicago.
Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter announced Thursday that the four Indiana officers acted in self-defense. Indiana State Police handled the review of the Aug. 10 shooting of 33-year-old Mark P. Coffey of Chicago Heights, Illinois.
The chase began in Crete, Illinois, and crossed into Indiana before going back into Illinois. Coffey hit a pedestrian and the chase stopped.
Shortly afterward, Coffey crossed back into Indiana and encountered the Indiana officers a few blocks east of the Indiana-Illinois state line near a gas station in Dyer, where he was shot.
Police say Coffey faced an arrest warrant for battery and robbery.
