VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida sheriff's deputy shot and killed a 62-year-old woman who lunged at him with a butcher knife after threatening suicide inside her home.
Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar told news outlets Thursday that the deputy acted in self-defense when he shot Susan Teel on Wednesday night in a gated community near Vero Beach.
Loar says the deputy went to the home after the woman's daughter called 911. Loar said Teel's 69-year-old husband, Dr. Dudley Teel, had found her in a bathtub attempting to cut her wrists.
Loar says the unidentified deputy is on administrative leave. Authorities have not released the races of the deputy or Susan Teel.
Sheriff's records indicate there have been 24 prior calls at the home, most of them involving other family members.
